Trauma Surgeon, Saving Lives from Cape Town to Victoria

What makes someone want to be a surgeon? We got to ask Alexandra Mihailovic this exact question. She is a trauma surgeon who has visited places all over the world and operated to help many victims of different types of trauma from war to vehicle accidents to health issues.

Alex’s education alone is impressive, a Bachelor of Science from the University of Waterloo followed up by completing medical school at McMaster University in Hamilton. She then pursued a general surgery residency and entered the surgical scientist program at the University of Toronto. If that wasn’t enough, she decided to get a PhD in Clinical Epidemiology. This PhD study took her to Uganda; her research was presented to the UN General Assembly and won several research awards. Following the completion of her residency she ended up training in trauma surgery in South Africa.

Currently working in Victoria BC she shared some interesting stories with us, like removing a large wad of congealed gummy bears from a child as well as patient who swallowed pens and utensils! Then we got some pointers on what to do in the event of a trauma in order to help people. Alex sure has studied hard to become a surgeon and save lives. What a fascinating career and incredible way to help to people.
